Diabetes and Your Feet
According to Diabetes.org.sg, one out of nine people aged 18 to 69 has diabetes in Singapore. That’s about 11.3 per cent of the population or more than 400,000 people. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that could have a serious effect on your feet if it’s not carefully managed. It may cause nerve ends to get damaged, thus resulting in loss of sensation and reduced blood flow to the feet.
Burning and tingling sensations or feeling pins and needles are common symptoms. If left untreated, this can lead to loss of sensation. When that happens, a person will be unable to detect any problems with their feet and this could result in the formation of ulcers, callouses and infections.
Other common symptoms of foot problems caused by diabetes include weakening of the weight-bearing joints. They can lead to the inability of one’s feet to support the body weight, making fractures and dislocations quite frequent.
At My Podiatry Clinic, our team of highly-trained podiatrists can screen you for diabetes and develop a personalised treatment plan to help you care for your feet. Our range of tests cover:
• Neurological sensation
• Blood circulation
• Skin and nail exam
Based on your results as well as prognosis from our podiatrist, we will develop a personalised treatment plan to help you care for your feet. Currently, we are collaborating with Professor Chua Chee Kai to research, further improve the durability and explore other material options for our 3D Custom Insoles for patients.
This study will allow us to closely mimic the natural contour of one’s feet to alleviate discomfort and pain, while improving the lifespan of an insole to reduce costs for the patient over the treatment period. This is a first in Singapore and for which My Podiatry Clinic is committed to provide quality clinical care.
